Phone robber gets 10 years imprisonment


An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man to ten years imprisonment in hard labour for robbing a lady of her handbag containing mobile phone and GHS130.00.

Kennedy Chukwuma denied conspiring with his accomplice, one Kofi to rob the lady and in the process caused harm to her but he was found culpable after trial.

Meanwhile, his accomplice, who is on the run is wanted by the Police.

Police Chief Inspector Maxwell Ayim told the Court presided over by Ms. Adelaide Abui Keddey that Madam Edna Akapko, who was the complainant in the case, resided at Nima near Maxlot Hotel whereas Chukwuma, the thief, had no fixed place of abode.

Prosecution said on July 4, 2021, at about 2330 hours the complainant was walking on the Mahogany Street towards her house and on reaching a section of the road near the President Akuffo-Addo’s residence at Nima, convict and his accomplice Kofi, now at large attacked her and pushed her to the ground.

They forcibly took her handbag containing a Samsung Galaxy A02 mobile phone valued GHS750.00 and GHS130.00 cash.

Chief Inspector Ayim said the complainant raised the alarm and sensing danger, the two took to their heels where the convict was arrested by the Policemen or duty at President’s house but Kofi managed to escape with the booty.

He said Chukwuma was subsequently handed over to Nima Police for investigations whereas complainant was issued with medical forms to attend hospital for treatment.

However, convict was cautioned about the offences and he voluntarily gave statement to Police, after investigations, he was charged with the offences and put before Court.

Frantic efforts are underway to arrest the said Kofi and put him before the court, Police Chief Inspector Ayim added.
